Pakistan’s boys defeated Belgium 3-2 and grabbed the second spot in Wednesday’s final. Belgium play Ghana for the Bronze medal after Ghana beat Singapore 2-1. Host Singapore and Chile meet in the 5th place playoff.
While the boys have a rest day on Tuesday the girls will play their classification matches.

Second victory makes Ghana qualify for Bronze Medal match
Ghana beat host Singapore 2-1 in Monday’s last match. The boys from Ghana finish the round-robin fourth and play off in the Bronze Medal match against Belgium. Host Singapore face Chile in the 5th place classification.

Ghana had the better chances on a participation in the Bronze medal match. Singapore would have needed a victory with at least three goals difference to become fourth.
The first big opportunity in this match belonged to Ghana: Fredrick DARKO combined well with Johnny BOTSIO whose shot went wide of goal. Team Singapore had a few penalty corners in the first half but was unable to benefit from them. Mohd Haseef SALIM was close to scoring but his shot was saved on the goal-line by Ghana’s defender Ernest OPOKU. OPOKU passed the ball quickly to Abdul Raham ANUM and Ghana was on the break. ANUM entered the circle but Singapore’s goalkeeper Rui-Ming Kevin NG saved with his stick. A few seconds before halftime Ghana however took the lead when Selorm KEMEVOR deflected a pass crossing the circle into the net.

Ghana had the better start into the second half as Abdul Rahman ANUM doubled the lead in the 44th minute. Suddenly the hosts took control of the game and won many penalty corners. Mohd Haseef SALIM cut the lead in half with a successful drag-flick. The hosts had many opportunities to equalise afterwards but did not use them. Team Singapore stays on zero points and finish last in the round-robin.

Pakistan defeat Belgium 3-2 and play for Youth Olympic Gold against Australia
Pakistan’s victory over Belgium made them finish the round-robin ranked second. Belgium stay third and play off in the Bronze Medal match, possible opponents are Ghana or Singapore.

The highlight of boys’ day 5 was the encounter between Belgium and Pakistan as the winners qualify for Wednesday’s final. A draw would have been enough for Pakistan to join Australia in the Gold Medal match due to the better goal difference. Both teams started with concentration and tried to avoid mistakes. The match took place mostly in midfield and the spectators did not witness much action in the circles. Muhammad IRFAN took the unexpected lead for Pakistan out of open play. After Muhammad Sultan AMIR tackled Belgian team-captain Dimitri CUVELIER near the base-line, the umpires awarded the first penalty corner of the match. Alexander HENDRICKX’s shot went into the left side of the goal and the score was tied again.

The second half started off in heavy rainfall. Not even one minute was played when Muhammad Arslan QADIR scored the 2-1. The attackers overran the Belgian defence and suddenly QADIR received ball possession in front of goalkeeper Arnaud FLAMAND. HENDRICKX equalised again for Belgium when his penalty corner drag-flick found its way into the net after Syed Kashif SHAH was sent back to the centre for breaking early. Belgium was the more creative side providing varied options late in the second half while Pakistan could only look for counter-attack opportunities. One of them succeeded when QADIR carried the ball all the way down the side-line, entered the circle and slipped a shot under FLAMAND. With ten goals in total QADIR is new top scorer in the boys’ competition. In the 66th minute Belgium replaced goalkeeper FLAMAND by an 11th field player, Antoine LEGRAIN took the goalkeeping privileges. Pushed forward by their supporters Belgium was urgent to score but were unsuccessful.

Boys from Australia overwhelm Chile 9-0 and win the round-robin
Chile stay on three points and play off in the 5th place classification match. Daniel BEALE’s 1-0 was also the 100th goal in the boys’ tournament.

Although the young Kookaburras have already qualified for Wednesday’s Gold Medal Match they started with great pace. Daniel BEALE scored out off open play in the 6th minute. This early goal was also the 100th goal in the boys’ Youth Olympic tournament. Oscar WOOKEY doubled the lead with a great reverse-stick-side goal and Flynn OGILVE extended the score to 3-0 one minute later. Australia, playing without the suspended Dylan WOTHERSPOON, slowed down their pace for a little while and gave Chile more space. The Australians became stronger again at the end of the first half, the crowd saw OGILVE scoring his second goal of the day.

Heavy rain occurred in the second half making it much harder for the players to control the ball. Team Australia was still the dominant side and scored twice before the game was interrupted in the 47th minute. After the restart Rory MIDDLETON and Oscar WOOKEY extended the lead to 8-0. The 8-0 was already WOOKEY’s eighth goal in this competition making him tie with the two top scorers Arno DEVREKER from Belgium and Muhammad A. QADIR from Pakistan. In the 65th minute WOOKEY flicked in another penalty corner making leader of the scoring list. Chile won two penalty corners in the 55th minute but both attempts were saved by the Australian goalie Andrew BUTTURINI.
The next match between Belgium and Pakistan will decide who will join the young Kookaburras in the final. Ghana and Singapore still have chances to play the Bronze Medal match.
